The Huanghe University of Science and Technology was set up in 1984 and it was the first private undergraduate university since the reform and opening-up. In 1994 it was approved to implement diploma degree by former State Education Commission and in 2000 approved by the Ministry of Education to be the first four-year private college in China. In 2004, it was granted to confer degrees. In 2008, it successfully completed the undergraduate teaching level evaluation of the Ministry of Education. In 2013 it became one of the first units undertaking the program named Strategic Study on Pilot Reform of Applied Universities of Science and Technology, one of first members of Application Technology University (College) Alliance and one of the first pilot universities for transformation and development in Henan Province. In 2014, it won one second class prize of National Teaching Achievement Award. In 2015, “Huanghe Maker Space” was awarded as one of the first National Maker Spaces by the Ministry of Science. The school was also awarded the Provincial Student Entrepreneurship Demonstration Base and one of the first exemplary application technology universities in Henan Province. In 2016, the school ranks one of the first top 50 universities in the area of innovation and entrepreneurship. In addtion, the school was aprroved of provincial entrepreneurship incubator base and the science and technology park was identified as a national science and technology business incubator. It was awarded as an Advanced Unit of Employment and Entrepreneurship for College and University Graduates. The university's path-breaking practice and innovative actions in running the university have been publicized many times by mass media such as the People's Daily, and the Washington Post.
The univeristy has two campuses and one locates in Jiyuan city. The university covers an area of 428 acres with a construction area of over 800,000 square meters. It has 16 second-class schools including Information Engineering school, Mechanical Engineering school, Medicine school and Business School, and 62 undergraduate majors including Electronics and Information Engineering, Mechanical Design and Automation, Clinical Medicine, and Economics as well as 33 diploma majors. A few of the major subjects on the provincial level are Regional Economy, Communication and Information Systems, and Mechanical Manufacture and Automation. The nursing program, Mechanical Manufacture and Automation, Electronic and Information Engineering, Music, Computer Science and Technology, Material Forming and Control Engineering are specialties in Henan province. Communication Engineering, Material Forming and Control Engineering, Economics and Nursing are brand majors in private education in Henan. Besides, there are also11 research institutions which includes the functional nano material institute and the private education institute. Apart from those the university has 45 teaching and research platforms such as the national professional technique testing center, the national off-campus college students practice base, post-doctoral research and development base, Engineering Research Center of Henan Province, and Henan Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center.
There are now more than 28,000 full time students. Teachers with senior professional titles account for 50% and 80% of young teachers have Master’s degree. There are more than 630 double-qualification teachers and over 150 honorable teachers including teachers with the title of Chinese Academy of Engineering, experts who enjoy the State Council special allowance, talents in the new century who are awarded by the Ministry of Education, national teaching achievement award winner, national and provincial teaching masters, provincial academic leaders.. In addition, the university has 110 on- the- spot training bases on campus, 288 laboratories, 15 on-campus and 316 off-campus on-the-spot training bases. The cost of the university's teaching and research facilities and equipment amounts to 240 million RMB,and its library has a collection of 294 million books.
