Location and transport
Xi’an Jiaotong University is located in central Xi’an, which is the capital of the Shaanxi Providence in Northwest China. Transportation to the school is mainly by bus which is the most convenient means of transportation in Xi’an city.
About Xi’an Jiaotong University
It was founded in 1896 with the name Nanyang Public School. During this time, four schools were established: a regular school, a foreign studies school, a high school, and a middle school. The university underwent a series of transitions changing its name several times. It was given its current name in 1959. The school specializes in engineering, technology, and public health. It has three main branches; Xingqing, Ynata, and Qujiang.
Xi’an Jiaotong University consists of 20 schools which offer 74 undergraduate programs, 198 master programs, and 114 doctoral programs. Over the 120 year history, Xi’an Jiaotong University has set out principles and put devotion to learning. It has aimed to produce responsible students who are self-driven and have a proper sense of direction who can be of great importance to the community.
The university has been following a path of bold innovation and active exploration as it seeks to restructure higher education comprehensively. With the availability of a top class team of educators, a favorable study environment, and substantial teaching resources, Xi’an Jiaotong University students have continued to produce high-quality results in academics.
The university is known to deliver some of the best graduates in China. Students graduating from the university have very high chances of getting employment from top employers in the world because it has a reputation of producing the best employment candidates. A recent study by the University showed that about twenty percent of the total graduates land themselves a high paying job almost immediately after graduating. Only a small percentage does not get employed.
Xi’an Jiaotong University is one of the leading research-oriented schools in China. The university has a comprehensive research strategy which offers several research programs. The university has also established themselves as an exceptional center of learning, because of the tenacious technical background and the research-based curriculum that is prevalent in these centers of learning.
The degree programs offered are a proof of research based curriculum in the University. It has five national key laboratories, four unique national laboratories, and two national engineering research centers which help in facilitating extensive research in the university. The school also has a well-equipped library which has over 3 million books, over 9,000 newspapers and periodicals, 64 databases, and more than 27,000 electronic journals. All these are facilities that help to facilitate research in the university.
Faculty to student ratio
Xi’an Jiaotong University has a faculty of more than 5,000 of which more than 2,500 are full-time faculty members, including over 1,500 professors and associate professors. There are 29 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. There are also six national-level teachers, 35 Young Investigator Award Laureates and 57 Changjiang Scholars. It has 32,000 full-time students of which about 15,500 are taking masters and doctorate programs. The University ratio between the faculty and students is well balanced; this means there is a full interaction between the students and teaching staff.
The school offers a wide variety of activities other than academic activities. Some of these activities include sports like basketball, soccer, tennis, golf, roller skating, etc. The school also has a gym where students can participate in body building. Some other activities include belly dancing, Chinese martial arts, taekwondo, tai chi, yoga, and ultimate Frisbee. There are also other activities such as cultural weeks, challenge weekends and much more are offered to students that make their stay in the school enjoyable.
Recent news about the University
The University recently celebrated ten years since the opening at a special maritime ceremony. The university has grown rapidly over the past ten years. The university’s Quantum Optics Team of the School of Science recently made substantial progress in the Hybrid Quantum System Research. Xi’anzhu Jiaotong University president, Zhang Maozhong visited the school on 28th March 2016 to congratulate upon the university’s 120th anniversary. (en.xjtu.edu.cn/XJTU_News).
Best courses offered
The University offers an extensive range of courses. Some of the best majors the school offers are in: science, management, philosophy, economics, medicine, education, law, art and engineering. Top-class professors, all holding PhDs and who have a wide knowledge on their respective, teach courses under these majors and guide students throughout their educational career. Graduating students have a high chance of getting employment because of their top class knowledge of their specialized field and because the university is well known domestically and internationally.
Opportunities for international students
International students can apply as long as they’ve met the requirements that the university has set out. Scholarships are offered for excellent students from other countries where the school will cater for the students’ full tuition and other personal necessities. The School of Overseas Studies is a faculty that uniquely deals with international students; it is responsible for their recruitment, admission, and teaching them Chinese as a second language.
The university offers up to 50% deduction of the annual tuition fee for international undergraduate students.

Some inconveniences related to the school
The most common inconvenience that severely affects international students is mostly associated with accommodation. Getting accommodation that best suits a particular person’s preferences are hard to find in the university. Another inconvenience is that Xi’an city is a bit more remote compared to other cities like Shanghai and Beijing which mean there is less opportunity for future for development.
