Overview

Formally known as Tongji German Medical School, Tongji University  is one of the key universities in China directly under the administration of the Ministry of Education. It is located in the Yangpu Universities Area of Shanghai and was established in 1907. In 1927, it was given its present name and became a state university as well as among the seven China’s earliest universities. In 1949, after the formation of PRC, it had five colleges including engineering, medical science, natural science, law and liberal arts and enjoyed a great reputation both in China and abroad as a comprehensive university.

In 1952, there was a nationwide restructuring making Tongji an engineering-intensive university with outstanding strength in architecture and civil engineering. The university started offering more specialized engineering programs in China. Tongji University has undergone rapid development to become a multidisciplinary university since China’s initiation of the open-up policy in 1978. It is among China’s most popular universities and attracts a huge number of students from all over China and the world at large.

Tongji University is renowned for its architecture and engineering programs, and its civil engineering department has always ranked top in China for many decades. Tongji was the first university to introduce urban planning in China and has since established a reputation in research. The university has restored links to Germany and made major milestones transform from mainly focusing on civil engineering into offering other engineering disciplines.

Outstanding Disciplinary Influence

Tongji University offers courses in 10 vast academic disciplines, including engineering, medicine, science, economics, management, arts, philosophy, education, law and literature. It offers 75 undergraduate disciplines, 50 of which are based on enrollment of students on the broad 17 disciplinary categories. The University also offers 55 academic master’s disciplines, 15 professional master’s disciplines and 26 engineering master’s disciplines.

Also, the university offers 31 doctoral disciplines, three professional Ph.D. disciplines as well as 25 post-doctoral research stations that are mobile. Its disciplines range from three first-level, and 7 second-level national key disciplines to 3-second level incubated national key disciplines and 17 first level Shanghai disciplines.

The university has more than 4200 academic staff for research and teaching, including seven members of Chinese Academy of Engineering, six members of Chinese Academy of Science, more than 710 professors as well as 1500 associate professors. Currently, the university registers over 50,000 students at all levels from certificate courses to post-doctoral attachments. Continuous Increase in Quality of Education and Scientific Research Capacity

Tongji University has five campuses including Siping campus, West Campus, North Campus, East Campus and Jiading campus. Living up to its target of development, the university’s scientific research is rapidly increasing. Tongji University has shown remarkable improvements in the overall research conditions proving that it’s better positioned to carry out scientific research. For the last five years, the research funding of the university has consistently increased, reaching 1.89 billion CYN in 2011.

International Education and Summer School at Tongji University

Tongji University has pre-college school that provides international students with courses before starting the study in their respective disciplines. Tongji University also has a summer training school which provides cooperative programs for a group of students from overseas educational organizations and universities.

The programs help the students build on their Chinese vocabulary, gain insight into Chinese culture through language training, traditional Chinese cultural classes, excursions and sightseeing as well as advancing their Chinese communication skills. They also handle other topics including law, economics and management, politics, etc.

Extracurricular Activities

There are many different activities at Tongji University, and international students are encouraged to join. There are athletic facilities, gyms and a stadium available on campus. There are also over 100 student organizations and clubs with new recruitments being done every year.
