Introduction and History

Established in 1896, Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) is one in a number of public universities located in Shanghai, China. The institute came into existence following an imperial edict that was put forward by the emperor of Guangxu.

The state telegraph and the communications agency run SJTU in its early years. In fact, the term Jiaotong loosely translates to transportation. However, the university has since then evolved, not just to provide communication-based studies, but into a full-fledged institution offering a myriad of other disciplines.

At the time of its establishment, SJTU had four schools, namely Normal, Foreign Studies, Middle and High Schools. The institution changed names in1 904 after the Ministry of Commerce took over the leadership and came to be known as the Imperial Polytechnic College of the Commerce Ministry. Two years later, it changed names again after the Ministry of Posts and Telegraphs took over.

The name changes did not end there. Around the time when the Republic of China was founded, Shanghai Jiao Tong University was placed under the supervision of the Communications Ministry and was named Government Institute of Technology of the Communications Ministry. In the year 1938, the Ministry of Education took over the leadership of the University, and it was renamed to National Chiao Tung University.

It was not until 1950, after the development of the pinyin Romanization system in Mainland China that the institution became known by its English name, Jiao Tong University.
