About the School
Seoul National University was founded in 1946 after Korea regained its independence and was the first educational foundation in Korea. It was formed after merging ten institutions of higher education around Seoul. Since those early days it has grown considerably and is now considered to be the most prestigious university in the country. The university has 16 colleges, nine professional schools and one graduate school.
Location and Campuses
Since its establishment, the university has undergone a series of changes; it has moved from location to location and merged with different schools. It was not until 1975 that the main campus was established at its current location, Gwanak. It has two campuses, one in Suwon and the other one in Daehango.
Seoul National University has continued to grow in every respect since its establishment. It takes education as its number one priority, and this commitment has made it one of the most competitive universities in South Korea today. The university has 65 research institutes and 300 buildings devoted to education and research on the Gwanak campus. It offers 83 undergraduate degree programs and 99 programs from five fields of study for Masters and Degree programs. The academic reputation of Seoul National University has continued to rise over the past six years and is currently at 99.2.
As one of the leading graduate schools in Korea, Seoul National University actively assists students in gaining the careers they wish to pursue. Students graduating from the university have strong chances of becoming employed in the public and private sectors, banking and finance, international organisations, the education sectors, etc. Graduates from the school also dominate South Korea’s academic institutions, government and political positions. The university’s employer reputation in 2015 was 96.6.
Research is a major focus at Seoul National University. It has some research institutes that are very well equipped for students and teachers to conduct research projects. The university’s Vehicle Dynamics and Control Laboratory recently demonstrated its automated vehicle technology. It was the first research team in Korea to conduct a successful test drive of a driver-less car on the highway.
Seoul National University also has a library which houses a total of around 2.6 volumes of books. The library offers students extensive information for research which can be easily accessed in a suitable reading environment. There are a further seven subsidiary libraries across campuses that include: agricultural studies, legal studies, dental studies, medical studies, business administration, social sciences and an international students library.
The university has a total of 27,986 students. Out of these, 16,496 are undergraduate students, 11,490 are postgraduate and 3,423 are doctoral students. The school also has about 2,000 international students. The academic staff numbers 4,952, of which 1,927 are full-time faculty members and 1,947 are staff members. This makes the ratio between faculty staff and students be 7:1.

The school has 16 colleges that offer more than 60 undergraduate degree programs.
College of Humanities, College of Social Sciences, College of Agriculture, College of Business Administration, College of Veterinary Medicine, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, College of Music, College of Pharmacy, College of Veterinary Medicine, College of Fine Arts and College of Liberal Studies.
The Graduate School of Engineering Practice, the Graduate School of Convergence Science Technology, the Graduate School of Health, the Graduate School of Business, the Graduate School of Public Administration, the School of Law and the School of Medicine.
Seoul National University is well established in all areas, including the extracurricular activities sector. The POSCO sports centre in the school offers students a wide variety of facilities. The sports centre is equipped with an Olympic-size swimming pool, golf ranges, weights room, racquetball courts and multipurpose fitness rooms. Other sports activities such as football, basketball and badminton also have dedicated facilities. The school has about 100 student clubs which enable students to socialise, master leadership skills and develop responsibilities.
Recent News Related to the University
1. The Seoul National University College of Engineering recently announced the construction of a new creative space for students interested in startups. The Haedong Idea Library will feature collections from world-class architects, designers, artists and philosophers. The purpose is to encourage students to foster the spirit of innovation within themselves.
2. The Seoul National University School of Law made changes to the admissions process whereby the weight of qualitative assessment and personal essays was lowered. This helped to increase the importance of LEET exam scores and other qualitative data.
Opportunities for International Students
Seoul National University offers various modes of study for international students. Overseas students can apply for degree courses as well as short-term courses. The school accepts about 600 international students who are from Seoul National University’s partner universities and who wish to study for a few semesters on exchange programs and transfer credits to their home institution.
Students who are from non-partnering universities but would like to study in Seoul National University, can undertake visiting student programs. The school also offers language courses for international students and a large number of students from overseas have enjoyed learning about Korea and the Korean language in the most prestigious school in Korea.
