What is an informal interview?

An informal interview is also known as the conversational interview that takes place between the employer and the job seeker. The employer takes the advantage to know about the job candidate whereas the job seeker takes it as an opportunity to enter the industry and know about the aspired future workplace.

Such an informal interview can take place in varied places over a cup of coffee or lunch. Informal interviews are befitting to the company’s purpose as it allows them to remain non-committal and evasive.

If the manager finds you suitable for the position, he can offer you the job there and then. However, if he has some other potential candidate in mind, he can refuse to have further contact after this informal conversation by ending the interview on a vague note.

You should ready answers to such basic questions before hand. However, the answers should not come out in a mechanical way. Do not cram them just keep the points ready and deliver in a usual way as you speak formally.

When a few minutes-long interview can decide your future, then it does not matter whether it is formal or informal. You should prepare yourself for this informal interview as if it is the most important interview of your life.

Your hair also provides a certain look to your overall attire; they should be well-groomed. Conservative dressing, the neat pair of shoes, no visible piercing except for ear and minimal odour are the keys to your informal interview attire.

Questions to ask in an informal interview

Experts suggest that your informational or informal interview can become your job interview as well. However, it is not advisable to ask your interviewee directly about it. It might put the interviewer off. Instead, you should ask the interviewee if he can recommend any other contact or what are the other things that you can do to become a potential candidate. This way, you might get a detectable answer to your desired question.

To do well in an informal or informational interview is as important as any other interview. So be well prepared, well dressed, and most of all well informed about the people you are going to meet in your interview.
