The truth is that we are all faced with challenges and difficult situations while at work. However, not everyone knows how to handle them effectively. Often people let career mistakes and crises cripple them mentally but fixing these career mistakes is not as daunting as others might think. Moreover, consider every crisis as an opportunity; you can reverse most errors. How you respond to such situations shows your real traits as a person and how you can make up for your career mistakes.
1. Always Hope For The Very Best And Be Prepared For The Worst.
This means to follow your gut. At the moment you see a red flag, always pay attention. Often, in life, you have kicked yourself just because of not listening to that voice in you that says, ‘Something might be wrong here’.
The next step is having a plan and a backup plan. In all careers, it is fundamental to lay out a strategy and also do your best to identify some potential pitfalls to career mistakes. You might not be able to predict what is coming your way, but by doing this exercise and laying out a solid plan, you are prepared on how to deal with it.
2. Learn How to Become a Problem Solver.
Stay calm. In any crisis due to career mistakes, people are likely to get anxious. Maintain a sense of zen and this will help you think more clearly and easily set the tone for people around you, creating a peaceful working environment.

Take responsibility for your actions. If you made some career mistakes, do not make excuses, simply apologize for the misstep, oversight or miscommunication on your part, I would recommend the the phrase ‘I take full responsibility’ as it takes away the opportunity for a fellow employee or boss to argue as you have taken responsibility. This phrase skips the embarrassing telling off stage and moves on to the consequence of your actions in a more peaceful way. This will often reduce the consequence of your action as there is less frustration felt by the other party.
4. Stay Authentic. Remember People Have The Ability To Tell Whether You Mean What You Say.
Act quickly. Do not let simple career mistakes turn into bigger, complex issues. This does not mean you should be reactive; deal with the wrongs the right away. Say, for instance, you just stuck your foot, knowingly or unknowingly, in your mouth during a business meeting; then this inadvertently offended a client or your boss. Acknowledge the mistake, apologize and try moving on without having to beat yourself up.
5. Keep Issues In Perspective.
Always learn and let it go. At times we mess up and tend to be hard to ourselves. We over analyze an error; this means reliving the career mistakes over and over. It is rare that the crises and challenges we deal with will be a life or death case. It is, therefore, important to step back and take a view of the situation and as well, its long-term effects, think about your mistake from the other parties position and often they will be less critical of your action than you are.
Everybody loves a quick comeback. Therefore, in most cases, when you handle a challenge, fix a problem quickly, make up for your career mistakes, and show out that you can easily move past them, others will follow you as well. Learn to respond swiftly and in a smart way so you can recover from your career mistakes before retirement.
Lead by example. We should learn from our career mistakes; these failures helps us identify some new ways of handling issues and doing things. They allow one to grow, hence becoming a better leader or manager.
Another issue when dealing with career mistakes is the failure to communicate effectively and showing respect to your team, direct reports, customers, prospects, stakeholders, directors, and shareholders. These are duly noted. Treat them in the same way and be consistent. You should get back to everyone in time, show some respect, be clear, thoughtful and concise in your communications.
So, next time when there is that misstep, misunderstanding or some career mistakes, just relax and be your own publicist by remaining calm. Seek the solution and see the challenge as a chance to lead and learn.
