If you are a high school or college student, you are probably curious about the world and planning out what you are going to do with your life. It is important to study and get good grades, but extra-curricular activities and study abroad opportunities not only improve your resume but also give you great experiences and perspectives. From improving your language skills to learning about a new culture, studying abroad will make you a more rounded person. There are lots of places to consider, but in this article, we’re going to take a look at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.
A Premier University
The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), was formed in 1977 as a social sciences off-shoot of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Situated on Jianguomennei Avenue, Beijing, CASS is one of the most prominent institutes in China, providing cutting-edge research in the social sciences, philosophy and policy decisions. The academy and faculty are dedicated to using their research to better the collective condition of society, with a particular emphasis on theories of Marx, Lenin, and Mao.
Facts and Stats
If you want to study at an accredited institution and add a bit of prestige to your resume, CASS is certainly one of the best options if you are considering China. As part of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, you will be studying at an institution that is rated in the top 10 for research. CASS is also closely associated with the Central’s Peoples Government, so the academy has an influential position on policy and social ideas.
CASS is made up of 5 academic divisions, 31 different research institutes, and 45 research centers which cover aspects of philosophy, law, literature, history, economics, social studies, international studies and Marxist studies. There are more than 4200 staff members, 3,200 of which are scholars, 1,600 graduate students and over 4,100 international students who are participating in academic exchanges. This accounts for a student to full-time faculty ratio of approximately 8:1. CASS remains dedicated to promoting this international collaboration and has many exchange agreements with universities around the world.
CASS has one of the strongest academic reputations in China and is even recognized by institutes outside of China. Recently, for example, Foreign Policy, which is an American news publication, described CASS as the top think tank in Asia. CASS has a range of academic resources to draw on from around the country as it is considered the foremost research institute by the Chinese government. The government often uses their research, commentary, and innovations.
As CASS is affiliated with the State Council of China, which is the official governing body, employers are familiar and engaged with CASS graduates. The economic system in China is more centralized than in the west, so graduates from public institutions such as CASS are better known among employers. A high percentage of graduates go on to enter the legislative, executive and judicial branches of the Chinese government or go on further into academic research. Being regarded as one of the top research institutions in the country also helps with its standing among private companies.
Learning and employment are the main reasons for going to university. But it is also important to get involved with activities besides your studies. At CASS, you will have the opportunity to attend a diverse array of events which will spark your curiosity. At the time of writing, for instance, the Institute of Archaeology in CASS will be holding a talk which explores 50 years of art archaeology. If interesting talks and networking isn’t your thing, then you have the city of Beijing on your doorstep.
Beijing is the Chinese capital and is home to over 11 million people. It has a long history stretching back thousands of years, integrated with a modern design and all the markings of an international, business city. Like any major city, you can expect a variety of activities on offer. Eating out, sports clubs and gyms, bars, and nightclubs – Beijing is an exciting place to be for a young person.
In the News
Being a prominent research institute, staff and scholars from the academy will frequently appear in the news. One example of this was a report produced by CASS which predicted that house prices growth will slow down from the second half of 2016, up to the second quarter of 2016, and that investment in real estate will decrease.

CASS faculty members also often give commentary on political events. Li Guoqiang, who is a deputy director of the Institute for Chinese Borderland Studies, provided some insight into the South China Sea dispute recently which can be seen in various news outlets such as the Business Standard.
Best Programs Available
There are a lot of fields of study at CASS, covering the spectrum of the social sciences. One prominent field of study is archaeology. The academy is in a unique position to uncover the hidden histories of Asia and can compete with western archaeologists. With the Chinese government investing heavily in maritime archaeology, it’s certainly an interesting time to study the subject.
Political science and economics are also great programs at CASS. China is becoming more dominant on the world stage – both politically and economically. Studying these programs at CASS will offer you a unique insight into the Chinese perspective of international affairs, which will provide an interesting contrast to the western viewpoint.
Academics & Research Aspects
CASS produces a variety of academic and policy research. Their work can be accessed in the forms of various journals such as the CASS Journal of Political Science and the Economic Research Journal. These are just two of many journals which CASS publishes and covers the range of social science topics. In addition to journals, researchers at CASS have published more in-depth work in the form of books such as The Thoughts on Nationalism and Nation Building and Mao Zedong’s Chinese Dream. CASS also has its own publishing house and has published over 8000 books, leaving a mark on the discourse around social sciences.
