History of Beijing University

Beijing University also known as Peking University (PKU) is situated at Haidian District in the western suburb of Beijing. It is a comprehensive university in China. The University sits on 274 hectares of land (2,743,532 square meters). The campus is also known as Yan Yuan (The Garden of Yan). Originally Peking University was called The Imperial University of Peking.

It was founded on July 3rd, 1898 and was the first National University in China covering an array of disciplines. Beijing University served as the highest administration for education in its early days and has continued to be a leading Institution of higher education in mainland China to date.

The Imperial University of Peking adopted the name Peking University in 1912 when the Chinese government raised its efforts in making it a world-class institution of higher learning to promote higher education among the population of the People Republic of China. Peking University continues to play a significant role in the course of modernization of China. The University has a world score of 87.70 putting at position 41 among top universities in the world. It ranks number 1 among the BRICS economic block and holds position 2 in the whole of Asia.

Faculties and Schools

Beijing University consists of 30 schools and 12 departments offering 93 undergraduate degree programs and 2-second bachelor’s programs. The university also offers postgraduate degree programs in 199 academic disciplines. It also has the highest number of doctoral specialities programs in the country at 173.

This renowned institution has a community of 8000 staff members serving the different schools and departments. 2900 of these are faculty staff members while 5100 are permanent full-time departmental staff. The student population stands at 29, 584 as of 2015 enrolment records. 14,465 of the total are pursuing their undergraduate studies while 10,031 are studying for their master’s degree courses. Admission for doctoral courses stands at 5088. The International student population is about 2000.

PKU has 216 research institutions and centres. These include2 nation-level engineering research centres, 18 essential academic discipline serving national development interests, and 12key national laboratories. This combination of research into important scientific subjects with the training of personnel ensures a high level of specialised knowledge and skills are imparted to the students who serve the national modernization demands.

Between the years of 2001 and 2005 alone, the institution implemented over 4000 research projects in conjunction with the Ministry of Science and Technology, The National Science Foundation Committee(NSFC), and the Ministry of Education of The Peoples Republic of China. In the past decade, PKU has won over 22 National and International awards in science and technology.

The University has five journal publications in which lots of information about the current ongoing and past research have been published for public consumption. Peking University has the largest library every built in the Asian continent. Georgia Institute of Technology, Peking University, and Emory University are currently administering the Wallace H Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering program. The program has been ranked as the number 2 research program in the United States.

Recently a team of researcher presented a Molecular Quantum-trajectory project describing the laser-driven dynamics of electrons processes in molecules.

International Students

Recently the ESI ranked PKU among the top 1% reputed universities for training students in courses and disciplines such as biology, mathematics, physics, engineering, computer science, biomedical sciences, nature sciences.

This ranking puts PKU in the footing with Western Ivy League institutions of higher learning in offering high-end science courses. This explains why 2000 international students flock PKU every year to pursue their studies.

Employability of its graduate which is an important criterion of ranking universities worldwide saw PKU ranked 11 by the French consultancy firm Emerging’ and German Research Institute Tendency’ it the 2012global employability survey.


Peking University has an International Students relations office dedicated to helping the overseas students before and after arriving at the University. This department also helps with applications for student VISA, Medical permits, and arrange for International students to get dormitories at the main campus.

Requests for admission can also be made directly on the university website. Once admitted, international students have an opportunity to apply for the available competitive scholarships which are awarded on academic merits.

In autumn 2014, 28.8% of the degree programs of International students at PKU had been awarded scholarships. The scholarships are from the government of China, Governments of the Municipality of Beijing and the Ministry of Education.

Disadvantages of Studying at The Peking University

The main downside to pursuing your education in China is that most classes at the undergraduate level are administered in the Chinese language. After admission, students are expected to take a one-year crash course to get acquitted with the Chinese language. Most postgraduate studies, however, are undertaken in English. If you are from the western world, it takes the time to get used to the Chinese food. While you’re adapting you can always get an America burger at the McDonald along the streets of Beijing.
